Mother and son struck by stray bullet at Downtown fireworks

April Pickard of Cordova and her 9-year-old son are recovering after a stray bullet struck them during the Independence Day fireworks at Tom Lee Park in downtown Memphis.

"Watching some fireworks for Independence Day...the next thing you know, we're in the back of an ambulance with a police escort to LeBonheur," said Pickard.

Pickard says she was sitting on a blanket in the park last night as the first set of fireworks lit up the night sky, when she felt a stinging sensation in her thigh.

Pickard's son Rickey Maidens, whose head rested in his mother's lap, said it felt like a rock had hit the back of his head.

"The first firework sounds, and that's whenever Mom felt the sting and I started screaming," said Maidens.

Pickard then found a bullet on her blanket.

Memphis Police don't know where the bullet came from.

Mother and son were both treated and released from the hospital.

Police have no suspects in custody.
