Neighbor shocked by Overton Park shooting

The victim of a Fourth of July shooting in Overton Park, and the suspect who then turned the gun on himself,  remained in critical condition at The MED Monday.

Officials believe Cora O'Neal was shot by her ex-boyfriend, Willie Jones.

Monday, across the street from the home that O'Neal and  Jones shared for a number of years, neighbors described the couple as friendly.  Neighbor Carl Griffin said he was stunned that Jones was accused of shooting O'Neal before turning the gun on himself.

"You need some help, he'll let you borrow his tools, ladders, or anything he had," Griffin said.

However, Griffin added, he suspected that something had gone wrong with the couple several weeks ago, when he saw that a number of Jones' belongings had been set out on the street.

"Evidently he got moved out, or put out," Griffin said.

Action News Five has learned that O'Neal had taken out an order of protection against Jones several days before the shooting. Sometime around June 16, Jones went back to the home with a police escort to get his belongings.

In her protection order, O'Neal accused Jones of harassing and stalking her.  She claimed that her ex-boyfriend had been driving around her house,e and sometimes parking and watching the house for long periods of time...

"I never paid that too much attention, but people have said they seen him sitting on the street just watching the house," Griffin said.

Still, until Griffin heard about the shooting, he never thought the couple's O'Neal and Jones relationship would erupt in gunfire.
