Five-year-old shoots sister in the hand

A five-year-old boy shot his six-year-old sister in the hand while the pair was playing with a gun Tuesday afternoon, Memphis police said.

The incident happened around 1:30pm at the Goodwill Village Apartments, located in the 2500 block of Peres.

Witnesses reported hearing as many as three shots.  Officials said the children's mother was present in their apartment in another room at the time the shooting happened. An infant was also in the apartment.

The six-year-old was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, where he injuries were reported as not life-threatening.

Memphis Police Lt. Steven Ware said the incident should serve as a reminder for parents.

"We've got to put these guns away," he said. "We've got to keep our kids safe and protect or kids, and we've got to lock these guns up if we're gonna own them."

Investigators are still trying to determine if any charges will be filed against the children's mother.  Family members said they were unaware that she even owned a gun.
