Woman upset at MPD response to 911 call

A Mid-South woman claims police didn't show up when she called 911 after a naked man harassed her in her east Memphis neighborhood.

"Out of no where, there was this loud banging."

Carole, who does not want us to disclose her last name for safety reasons, said Tuesday that the she was in her home when a loud banging on her door woke her up in the middle of the night.

When she looked out her glass door, "There was this man - this individual - totally naked," she said.

As Carole called 911, the man moved to another window, continuing to bang on it.

"Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam!" she said. "(It was) very loud, very aggressive."

After being assured police were on the way, Carole told the 911 operator she had to hang up to get to a more secure location.  There, she waited for police to arrive.

"I waited," she said. "I waited and waited."

Carole said the wait was frightening because she was afraid the man was still lurking outside.

"The second hour, I started to get disappointed," she said. "Not quite angry, but ok, they didn't come help me."

When she called 911 at 7:00am - more than four hours later - an officer told her police did respond, but didn't come to her door because the officer claimed Carole had said she didn't want them to disturb her.

Carole said that's not true.

"No one is perfect, or institution or employee. But you'd like to think you could count on them to come in an emergency," she said.

A Memphis Police Department Spokesperson said officers did go to Carole's neighborhood, and didn't find the man.  The spokesperson added that Carole didn't make it clear that she wanted to speak with someone.  After she called again in the morning, an officer did come out to take a report.
