Downtown carriage crash - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Downtown carriage crash

A pickup truck rear-ended a horse-drawn carriage on Front Street around 10:15 Tuesday night. Both the Toyota Tacoma and the carriage were headed southbound when they collided.

The driver of the truck escaped injury, but the carriage driver was transported to The Med in non-critical condition for evaluation after being ejected from his seat during the collision.

There were no passengers aboard the pumpkin-shaped "Cinderella" style carriage at the time of the accident.

The truck driver says the crash happened because his brakes failed. He was cited for failure to maintain proper lookout, and police say speed may have played a role, but alcohol did not.

Carriage company proprietor Jake Schorr says both carriage driver and horse did everything in their power to stay safe.

Schorr says the damage to the carriage is estimated at around $9,000 dollars.

The horse, named Blue, escaped with just a scratch. A puppy traveling in the carriage was not injured.
