Brewer hopes to showcase local talent in new show

Memphis most talented performers will get a chance to work with the city's most recognizable director as part of a deal with MTV.

Memphian Craig Brewer wants to showcase the Bluff City's musicians and actors in his new production.

Brewer is working with MTV to produce a new show called "Five Dollar Cover." It will feature 15 short episodes or webisodes available on the internet only.

Brewer said that the show will focus on Memphis musicians and actors as they work to stay creative and pay the rent.

Performers like Amy LaVere and Al Capone will portray themselves.

The show will be part reality and part scripted.

Brewer plans to only use Memphis and Shelby County residents for the cast and crew.

"I don't want people to think that Five Dollar Cover is just going to be Five Dollar Cover. 5 Dollar Cover is just a show and a web experience that is going to bring all of these musicians and all of these writers and all of these personalities into a funnel that we will be directing some traffic there way and hopefully getting some exposure to some fantastic musicians," Brewer said.

Viewing the series will be free.

You can watch it on your computer, download it to your iPod, or move it over to your television.

When the episodes go online, fans will be able to download songs by the featured artists or take a "virtual tour" of Midtown and learn more about Memphis music.

Shooting starts next week on July 18th.
