Ole Miss geologist dies in car crash

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - James Woolsey, the director of Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute at University of Mississippi has died in a vehicle accident near Batesville. He was 72.

The University says the accident happened Wednesday.

Woolsey a renowned geologist and expert in undersea minerals resources, led efforts to establish a gas hydrate monitoring station on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico.

Since 1982, Woolsey served as the MMRI director and also was director of the university's Center for Marine Resources and Environmental Technology and the Seabed Technology Research Center.

Visitation is set for noon on Monday in Wesley Hall at Oxford-University United Methodist Church. A memorial service follows at 2 p.m. at the church, with the Reverend Warren Black and the Reverend Claire Dobbs officiating.
