Accused trespasser grabs officer's gun from office

Accused felon Willie Hampton broke into a secure area at 201 Poplar Wednesday and attempted to steal a police officer's gun.

Police say Hampton entered a police lieutenant's unlocked office after bypassing the area's key-code entry system.

Hampton then grabbed a gun from the officer's purse.

Attorney Mark Saripkin says access to the office isn't as secure as one might expect.

"I had to be walked in, but I understand that actually you can walk up the stairwell, and it's not locked," said Saripkin.

Hampton is charged with criminal trespassing. He was at 201 Poplar for a court appearance on another trespassing charge: no word on how this recent incident might affect that case.
