Suspicious fire damages DeSoto stadium

Southaven police are investigating a suspicious fire that caused damage inside the stadium of DeSoto Central High School Friday night.

The blaze was reported at 7:52 p.m. Southaven firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze within 15 minutes.

Police questioned youths on bicycles near the scene, but no one was taken into custody. The incident is still under investigation.

Southaven Chief of Police Tom Long said, "This was more than school vandalism. This was felony arson."

Nearly half of the stadium seats in the center section were destroyed, as was the exterior of the press box. The fire was started on the concrete below the aluminum bleachers, melting the chairs and a support beam. The damage is still being assessed, but could have been much worse.

"There are a lot of unsung heroes who reported information to authorities last night that avoided injuries and further damage to the school, " said DeSoto Schools superintendent Milton Kuykendall. "If no one had taken action, this blaze could have spread and been disastrous."
