DeSoto County Schools soon to be the largest district in Mississippi

The DeSoto County School District is on its way to becoming the largest school district in the State of Mississippi.

With 30,000 students spread across 35 different schools in DeSoto County, growth in the district has been almost explosive.  With an average of 1,200 to 1,600 new students each year, district has grown by nearly 7,000 students in the past five years.

With the opening of new schools in the past several years, like DeSoto Central High School and others, school system officials say they are well prepared for the influx of students.

"Our job is to prepare to teach every student that shows up at our doors, and give them a free and appropriate public education," said Ken Ried, Assistant Superintendent for DeSoto County Schools.  "That's the real challenge, whether we're the largest school district in the state, or the second largest."

Within the next three to four years, DeSoto County is scheduled to have a total of 40 schools, with five new schools to open by 2012.
