Tipton deputies investigate possible abuse after girl dies of burns

Investigators are investigating a possible case of child abuse after a four-year-old girl died after suffering severe burns.

According to police, around 1:00pm last Thursday, Amber Swain brought her four-year-old daughter to Baptist Hospital-Tipton with severe burns to her body.  The girl was then taken to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center, and later to Shriner's Burn Hospital for Children in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Tipton County Sheriff's Department Deputy Chief Donna Turner said the girl's exact cause of death will be determined once an autopsy is complete.

"I do know as a matter of my experience that the child's worst injury sometimes is addressed, and the child being taken to a burn center...obviously LeBonheur thought that was the biggest threat at that time," Turner said.

Police say Swain has two other children.  Her boyfriend, Bobby Joseph Jones, has admitted to abusing Swain's three year old daughter, according to investigators.  He is charged with one count of child abuse and neglect.

No charges have yet been filed in the death of the 4-year-old girl.  Police say the preliminary autopsy report should be ready sometime next week.
