Girl nearly drowns in Memphis pool

Firefighters responded to a near drowning Wednesday morning at the Kate Sexton Community Center in Memphis, officials said.

According to investigators, a six-year-old girl nearly drowned in a pool at the community center.

Col. Mark Collins of the Memphis Police Department said the girl was out of the water and breathing on her own when firefighters arrived.

"The lifeguard noticed the child go under (and) retrieved the child from the pool," he said.

Paramedics rushed the child to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in non-critical condition.

It was not the first such incident at a Memphis pool this summer.  Two children drowned in city pools the day they opened at the end of May.  All city pools were closed for two weeks as lifeguards were retrained.

Wednesday, one such lifeguard revived the child with CPR.

The investigation continued throughout the day.  Police said the six-year-old was one of 29 children at a Memphis City day camp.

Along with two lifeguards on duty, officials said, three other staffers were in the pool.

"We are certainly pleased that we did not have another tragedy this morning," Collins said.  "The lifeguard appeared to be attentive."

City officials said the lifeguards did their job.
