Man surrenders to deputies after shooting his wife

A man shot and killed his wife late Sunday night in their southeast Shelby County home, investigators said.

According to Shelby County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Steve Shular, after the shooting, the suspect , identified as 48-year-old Travis Williams,walked next door and told neighbors what happened.

Shular said deputies arrived at the couple's home in the 4300 block of Whispering Bend Cove North around 10:00 p.m. Sunday.

The suspected shooter, standing outside his neighbor's home, was not armed when deputies arrived, and quickly surrendered.

The man told deputies that he and his wife, 50-year-old Alberta Williams, had on-going marital problems. After Alberta went to bed, Travis told investigations, he shot her with a pistol once in the neck. She was dead at the scene.

According to Shular, no other people were inside the house. The couple had three grown children.

Travis Williams was charged Monday with First Degree Murder.

It was the fourth homicide investigated by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department in 2008.
