DeSoto County studies trucks

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County is considering whether to undertake a crack down on overweight and unsafe trucks traveling through the county.

Regulatory expert Dane Maxwell of Wiggins says a pilot program used in Harrison County in 2000 assigned the sheriff's department to inspect trucks on Interstate 10. The program was disbanded earlier this year when a new sheriff.

DeSoto County supervisors have been working with board attorney Tony Nowak to overhaul the county's heavy-haul ordinance, which regulates traffic of heavy trucks on county roads.       The county sees a high truck volume on Interstates 55 and 69 and U.S. Highway 78.

Maxwell has told supervisors that most localities rely on the state to police federal motor carrier regulations, but the state doesn't always have the resources to do that.
