Shelby County Sheriff's Department to conduct wellness checks

Shelby County sheriff's deputies will conduct wellness checks on senior citizens as temperatures near the 100 degree mark this week.

Department officials said it is important during warm weather months to keep tabs on elderly family members by checking in on them in person.  If you can't, they said, call local law enforcement.

"This is one of the most vulnerable times of the year for the elderly to get sick," said sheriff's department spokesperson Steve Shular.  "Not just because of the heat, but also because of the other issues that have to do with breathing problems, and things of that nature."

Shular stressed you should only call law enforcement to do a wellness check if you believe the person is in danger, and you should call the police or sheriff's department where that person lives.

Deputies will be out checking on seniors beginning Tuesday morning.
