Taking Back Our Neighborhoods: Back to School Rally

One Mid-South group is striving to take back our neighborhoods by giving children a head start as they head into the new school year.

Stevie Moore of Freedom From Unnecessary Negatives held his 5th annual "Stop the Killing Back to School Rally" at the Hollywood Community Center.

"It's a message to them that we do care. Somebody does care," said Moore.

It was a hot and humid Saturday morning, but that couldn't stop this group from shining the light on a united effort.

"It's great to have programs like this, and other things going on that reach out to help the children and the parents," said Charlene Harmon, mother of an MCS student.

Moore lost his son in a shooting five years ago, and says he wants to spare other parents the same pain. "I saw him laying down with his head blown off, bleeding in the street. I'm trying to curtail that. I'm tired of seeing our young people die."

And it seems the children were listening.

"It's easier to go to school, and they're giving us what we need and helping our parents," said student Shamya London.

Along with the message to stop the killing, children from kindergarten through grade 12 left with a full stomach and sack full of free school supplies, donated by citizens, businesses and government agencies from all over Memphis.

"We just can't talk about the bad children and we don't engage them," said Moore. "The gangs engage them -- that's why they're going towards the gangs. The gangs give them something."

Moore says, thanks to the community, 1,000 children will go to school this year with a little boost, and the knowledge that Memphis cares about their safety and well-being.
