MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The University of Memphis football team began practice Monday, and coach Tommy West said Arkelon Hall is the No. 1 quarterback right now.
West said Hall will be the starter unless he performs poorly in pre-season drills.
Others competing at quarterback are Will Hudgens, Brett Toney and Tyler Bass.
Because of a heat advisory and an air quality alert, the Tigers' first practice session began at 5:45 a.m.
The schedule also allows players who are in summer school to continue their classes.
The Tigers will work out in shorts the first five practices and will be in full pads on Saturday, which will also mark the first two-a-day session.
