Skeletal remains found in Tunica County identified

Skeletal remains found in Tunica County last June have been identified, and a homicide investigation is underway, Tunica County Sheriff K.C. Hamp announced Tuesday.

According to Hamp, skeletal remains found June 12th were those of Doris Butler, a 44-year-old Tunica woman missing since February of this year.

Hamp said Butler was last seen leaving the A&H Grocery on Main Street in Tunica on February 3rd, and was reported missing several days later.  Hamp said his department would join the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Tunica Police Department in working the case as a homicide.

Tunica County Deputy Sheriff Randy Stewart said deputies have returned to the area where Butler's body was found, but have not found any other bones.

"This is an active homicide investigation, and will be until something turns up to prove the cause of death to be something other than homicide," Stewart was quoted as saying in a press release.

Butler's exact cause of death has not been released.
