One person dead after chase with sheriff's deputy

One person is dead after a high speed chase Wednesday with a Shelby County sheriff's deputy.

Investigators said the suspected drug dealer probably would not have served more than a couple of months if he was caught. Instead, his decision to run from a deputy cost him his life.

It all started as a routine traffic stop when the suspect failed to use a turn signal.  When a Shelby County sheriff's deputy tried to pull the man over, he sped away.

Shelby County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Steve Shular said the man threw at least six baggies of marijuana out of his car's window during the brief pursuit.

Eventually, the man's car ran right off of Egypt Central Road, landing in a nearby drainage ditch.  Shular said the man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died instantly.

Afterwards, investigators found even more drugs in the man's car.

"We also made an initial search of the car and discovered more drugs (and) marijuana in the car, as well as cash," Shular said.

The force of the car's impact sent some of the cash into the ditch.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the suspect, but said he had a prior criminal record.
