Fullilove's council attendance not impacted by pills

The day after a late night in Tunica, Memphis City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove addressed photos of how her night ended.

"And I had a good time," said Fullilove.

The photos show her asleep behind the wheel of her car in the parking lot of Fitzgerald's Casino.  A security guard drove her home.

"I took a couple of pain pills for my back," Fullilove told Reporter Jason Miles in an exclusive interview.

She told us pills are a big part of her life.

"I'm on back pain medication, and I have other pills for my legs that I have to take three times a day -- and I have other pills," said Fullilove.

They are pills on which Fullilove would rather not be dependent.

"But for the rest of my life, I am going to be," she said.

Fullilove said she she tolerates pain during city council meetings in order to keep her mind clear.

"And I won't take any pills until I leave city council," she said.

She has managed to not miss a single council meeting since taking office.  We uncovered minutes from every meeting since the beginning of the year.  She attended every meeting.

"You know, it's tough, when you have chronic pain, it's gonna be a struggle," says Councilman Shea Flinn.

Colleagues at city hall say Fullilove has managed to cope.

"It's really easy to slip over the other edge," adds Flinn.

That is despite the amount of medication she's taking.

"Because I'm in a lot of pain -- I am," said Fullilove.

Councilwoman Fullilove is not supposed to drive in Mississippi as a condition of her probation.  She told us she went to Tunica with friends.  And that they helped her get her car back to Memphis.
