Police arrest 1,300 in weekend sweep

Memphis police arrested more than 1,000 suspects over the weekend as part of Operation Summer Heat.

According to Memphis Police Department Director Larry Godwin, the operation kicked off Friday night and went through the weekend.

Godwin said hot spots in each police precinct were identified, and officers saturated those areas.

In the end, 1,369 people were arrested for various crimes - many of them caught in the act.  In fact, Godwin said, there were so many arrests during the operation that the jail was put to its limits.

At one point, according to Godwin, inmates had to be placed on portable bunks in the gymnasium.  The overcrowding has since been alleviated as many of the suspects have bonded out.

Godwin said this latest operation knocked crime down over the weekend by one-half of one percent.
