Mid-South motel destroyed by fire

Fire crews in Forrest City fought a fire at the Days Inn for more than four hours.

"The fire had walked all the way across the attic area upon our arrival," said Asst. Chief Anthony Reniger.

"The building was sprinkled," said Reniger.  "But the fire was above the sprinkler system," he adds.

A video clip sent to Action News Five by a witness shows the flames ripping through the roof.  Brandon Brooks saw them too.

"It was big smoke, big flames, a lot of fire," said Brooks.

The fire burned the 2nd floor of the motel building to a crisp.  The bottom floor was ruined by smoke and water.  36 rooms in all are destroyed.

"You know, it's just devastating," said assistant motel manager Virginia Luker.

"I was crying," said Luker.  "I mean, it was so bad, I was crying."

Luker tells us a housekeeper noticed smoke and soot in a bathroom.  Minutes later, the entire attic was engulfed.

"It just got all out of control after that," said Luker.

Only one guest was in his room at the time of the fire.  He made it out.  Luker and a police officer made sure no one else was left.

"Fortunately, we was all lucky I guess," said Luker.

Crews continue to investigate the origin of the fire.

"We haven't had one this big in quite some time," saidChief Reniger.

Right now, they Suspect an electrical problem is to blame.  Early estimates put damages at around one million dollars.  No word on if the motel plans to rebuild.
