Herenton agrees with Cash's district plan

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton said in an interview Wednesday that he supports the new Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash's plans to divide the school district.

"Well, I think it's an excellent idea," Herenton said "I commend Dr. Cash. He's right on target."

The target is to create four distinct regions within the school system:  Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest.

"We think it's a smarter way to organize a large complex school district," Cash said Monday.

Cash said the plan provides for a better future, but the breakdown is based in the past.  When Herenton was superintendent, the district was divided into four regions.

This time, Herenton said, he's not a part of the decision-making process.

"This is all Dr. Cash," he said. "It has nothing to do with Willie Herenton."

But Herenton approves. Under the plan, each region will have a separate administrator responsible for academics, behavior, attendance and other issues within that regions.  Herenton said the plan provides for better performance AND better management.

"It's hard to do that centrally," he said. "It's just like the police department. We have precincts. You can break it down. You have a precinct commander. The school system has to be broken down into manageable components."
