Memphis police investigate early morning arson

Authorities are investigating an arson in the 3600 block of Brompton Road. They're questioning a person of interest who was spotted fleeing the scene and later returning.

Memphis firefighters arrived on the scene around 1:30 Thursday morning to find the vacant, single-story brick home engulfed in flames. It took crews about 15 minutes to contain the blaze.

Authorities said the damage indicates there was some type of explosion, which neighbors said they heard, prompting them to call 911.
Neighbors also said they saw a man in a white vehicle speeding away from the scene, only to return a few minutes later. They also said the man smelled like gasoline.

Authorities took the man, whom they're calling a person of interest, into custody for questioning.

Police are treating this as an arson investigation.
