Police arrest more than two dozen in morning drug sweep

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Dozens of drug dealers were taken off the streets Thursday morning as Memphis police conducted another Blue Crush strike.

Before dawn, doors were busted down around town as undercover officers searched for drug dealers as part of Operation: Safe Crossing.

"This is the same person that's going to break into your car to steal CD's, to steal your radio, break into your house, steal electronics," said one undercover officer.

Police were on the hunt for 52 people indicted earlier this week.  Twenty-six were arrested - a success, according to Memphis Police Department Director Larry Godwin.

"They feel good," Godwin said of his officers at a press conference Thursday afternoon.  "They feel good because they know we're making a difference."

But as police announced results of Thursday's operation, despite their best efforts, half of those indicted remained on the loose.

"Soon as I take this microphone off, I'm back on the street looking for these guys," an undercover officer said.

Godwin said undercover officers also arrested 16 prostitutes, plus others with outstanding warrants who weren't on the list of indictments.
