FirstWorks reports urgent need for help

For the first time in 20 years, the shelves of the FirstWorks Food Pantry and Clothes Closet in Memphis were bare Thursday.

Every Tuesday through Friday, FirstWorks opens its doors on North Second Street downtown to help those in need of emergency food and clothing.  Some families who qualify get a week's worth of groceries.

Almost everything at the FirstWorks is donated, and recently people have been turned away because donations have fallen short - particularly in the men's section of the clothes closet.

"We really need people to respond," said FirstWorks Board Chair Rev. Martha Wagley. "A number of people come downtown for recreation, and they come to work.  What about tomorrow, when you come to work, bring a bag of groceries and take them to FirstWorks at 92 North Second during lunch?"

Items urgently needed:

Food-

  • Bottled water
  • Canned meat, fruits and vegetables
  • Cereal
  • Granola Bars
  • Pasta
  • Juice

Men's Clothing-

  • T-shirts
  • Blue jeans
  • Cotton socks
  • Underwear
  • Shorts and shoes
