In a world full of copy cats, a true original really stands out. And so, we remember Isaac Hayes - unforgettable in style, and substance.

Just the first few measures of the "Theme from Shaft" and most of us are instantly transported someplace else.

Isaac Hayes' music was different. His work as a songwriter, arranger, producer and performer had a profound influence on several different musical eras and genres. He was a trend setter, and not just in the world of music.

What's more, Isaac Hayes was proud of the place he came from - both the region and his personal circumstances. As a child, he picked cotton in Tipton County and there he learned powerful life lessons from a grandmother he revered.

One message in particular that Hayes recalled was his grandmother's advice to keep moving forward. It was a lesson in how to pick cotton, and a lesson in life. We're grateful that Isaac Hayes never looked back and we're happy that he took so many of us along for the ride.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
