Four firefighters injured battling massive blaze

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Four firefighters were injured Friday morning while battling a massive blaze at the old Breakaway Athletics building on Union Avenue.

Officials said the fire broke out at the old Breakaway Athletics store in the 1700 block of Union around 12:45am Friday.  Crews from 10 different firehouses were eventually called to battle the blaze.

Three firefighters were on the second floor of the building of then it partially caved in.  Two of those firefighters were transported to Methodist University Hospital, while the third was treated for injuries at the scene. Later, a fourth firefighter was taken to the hospital after he was hit by falling debris.

All four were treated and released.

The empty building did not have a sprinkler system. Residents said they have seen the homeless use the building as a place to sleep

A Memphis Fire Department spokesperson said investigators are still trying to determine was started the fire.
