Memphis woman faces rape charges

31-year-old Jessica Bailey of Memphis is charged with aggravated statutory rape for having intimate relations with a 16-year-old girl. Bailey admits to knowing the girl's age.

Bailey's family said she is married with children. Family members thought the alleged victim was just a friend of one of Bailey's kids.

"She kept it from me, I guess," a family member said.

Bailey's relationship was kept secret until police responded to a fight between her and the teenager Thursday night.

Bailey's brother, who asked not to be identified, said he knows the girl. "I looked at it as one of the kids' friends, tomboy or something, you know what I'm saying?"

According to an affidavit of complaint, the girl told police she and Bailey had been dating for the last six months, and living together for the last two months.

Bailey admitted to having sex with the girl the night before her arrest.

The charge of statutory rape changed to aggravated statutory rape because of the complaint.

"The effort was to emphasize the seriousness of it," said attorney Walter Bailey, no relation to the suspect.

He says the case is not typical of statutory rape, but it's not plain rape, either.

The 16-year-old was also taken into custody, but has since been released. She struggled with officers when they tried to break up the fight between her and Bailey.

Bailey is being held on a $25,000 bond.
