Fans to gather Monday for Hayes tribute

Fans and admirers will gather Monday at a public memorial service to say goodbye to legendary musician Isaac Hayes.

The tribute will take place at Hope Presbyterian Church in Cordova from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

"He did in music what Dr. King did through speech and reasoning," said Memphis City Councilman Myron Lowry. "He was a civil rights leader, using his musical talents to bridge the gap."

The 65-year-old Memphis music legend died of a stroke last Sunday. Family members found him unresponsive next to a treadmill in his master bedroom.

Hayes will be remembered not only as a great musician and innovator, but as a great community leader.

"Isaac Hayes was a visionary and a dreamer," said Rev. Samuel Billy Kyles, Hayes' friend. "He was not afraid to dream, and he had no problem doing what dreamers do: they step outside the box."

Stay with and tune in to Action News 5 at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. for full team coverage of Monday's memorial service.
