Thieves hitting vegetable garden for elderly residents

All summer long, residents of the Fox Hollow community in Covington said someone has been stealing vegetables from their garden and now, they're tired of it.

Mid-South gardens are a familiar summertime sight.

But not for residents at an independent living community in Covington.

"I love it and I love the vegetables and I love sharing the vegetables," said resident Michael Eubanks.

When residents came out to pick vegetables from their garden, they got a little less than they bargained for.

"Every time they come down here to pick something out of the garden, all their vegetables are gone," said Fox Hollow manager Rosie Hughey.

For the past several months, vegetables disappeared off the vines and now residents are determined to find out who's responsible.

"I don't mind giving anything to anybody if they ask me for it but I don't like anybody going in and destroying my garden," Eubanks said.

Residents at Fox Hollow believe the thieves are using paths to come in, steal the vegetables, then take them away.

Residents believe someone is stealing the vegetables in the middle of the night.

And they're so upset they called the police.

"Late nights we'll keep an extra patrol out here to keep watch on things, keep watch on people walking around, monitor where they're going," said Ron Duffin with the Covington Police Department.
"They are going to get caught and they're going to get prosecuted. We're going to prosecute them to the fullest extent," Eubanks said.

Catching the thief is something these residents hope will happen sometime soon.

If you have any information on who might be stealing the vegetables from the residents' garden, call the Covington Police department at 901-475-1261.
