DeSoto County officers learn more about woman's remains

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - Detectives say a woman whose remains were found in the Lewisburg area early last month have had a tongue ring.

Mark Blackson of the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department says a tongue ring was found inside a blanket in which the body had been wrapped.

Meanwhile, state crime lab pathologists in Jackson have said the bones are those of a black woman. Blackson says officials believe the woman's age could range from the mid-20s to 40.

Pathologists have only had a limited number of bones to work with, including a skull, a rib cage and bones from one arm and hand.

Blackson says that while the scientists have concluded that the body had been exposed to the elements for more than a year, no more precise time element has been offered.

The bones were found off Byhalia Road in the Coldwater River bottoms, about 100 yards west of the Coldwater River, about a mile east of Miss. 305.

The area is subject to periodic flooding.

Blackson said the pathologists have not indicated a likely cause of death.
