Children injured in ambulance-involved crash

At least two children were rushed to a hospital Thursday night, following a crash involving a van and a Rural Metro ambulance at a busy Raleigh intersection.

The ambulance was responding to a call when it crashed at Egypt Central and Raleigh-Millington Road. A spokesperson said no ambulance crew members were injured.

The passengers of the van included two adults and four children between ages 3 and 13.

Walter Smith said his friend, the driver of the van, called him after the crash to ask for help.

"He'd been involved in a bad crash. They took him and his wife to Methodist North, and his two children to LeBonheur," said Smith.

A relative of the crash victims said they are expected to recover.

It's not clear what caused the crash, but wet and rainy road conditions may have been a factor.

Police are investigating.
