Memphis father charged with killing baby daughter

Three-month-old Jalissa Fuller never had the opportunity to play with other children in the Whitehaven apartment complex where she lived.

The baby girl's short life ended violently Monday night.

"The baby did have visible injuries to her face," said Memphis Police spokesperson Monique Martin.

Police say the baby's father, Julius Fuller, is responsible for the injuries.

"Further examination revealed she had blunt force trauma to the head," said Martin.

The baby's mother left two children with their father while she went to work.

"When she arrived, he left," said Martin.

That's when the mother found little Jalissa unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom.

"Paramedics made the scene and pronounced the three-month-old dead on the scene," said Martin.

According to a police affidavit, Fuller first claimed Jalissa's older sister hit her with a container of baby wipes. Then he said he fell to the floor with the baby in his arms.

If it had been an accident, police say Fuller should have called for help.

The medical examiner ruled the infant's injuries consistent with homicide.

"That's horrible," said neighbor Octavia Davis. "Especially a father doing that to his child."

The baby's mother may have already moved out of the complex, but she leaves behind the thoughts and prayers of her neighbors.

"Being a dad myself and having children, I can't fathom this type of thing happening," said Anthony Bills.  "Especially at my hands, you know what I'm saying?"

Investigators say this marks the third child abuse-related homicide this year involving a child less than a year old.
