Cops in West Memphis investigate separate, unrelated murders

WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC-TV) - West Memphis, Arkansas was murder-free in 2008 - until earlier this week.  Now, homicide detectives are investigating two unrelated murders in a span of just seven days.

In both cases, a suspect is behind bars.

The first murder happened last Friday.  According to investigators, Samuel Williams got into a fight with his girlfriend after they left a night club.  When officers arrived at the murder scene, they found a woman, naked, shot dead in her driveway.  Investigators said Williams later admitted to shooting her.  He was charged with first degree murder.

The second murder happened just before midnight Thursday night.  Investigators said Timothy Allen, the 16-year-old boyfriend of a 21-year-old girl, got into an argument with the 27-year-old father of the woman's child.  Allen allegedly shot and killed the man.

Captain Donald Oakes of the West Memphis Police Department said the two murders were an anomaly in a town that typically has fewer than five murders each year.

"Both have a domestic twist to them - they have a relationship element," Oakes said. "These are homicides that no type of law enforcement can slow down. They are not street crimes - they are not random victims. They are based on domestic relationships."

Oaks said the Allen has been charged as an adult, and is being held on a $100,000 bond.
