Morning robbery leaves Mid-South man in serious condition

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A landscaper was out of surgery late Monday afternoon after he was shot on the job in the Chickasaw Gardens neighborhood.

Robbers shot Clifford Belue in the front yard of a home on Chickasaw Parkway.

Police said Belue and an assistant were cleaning a yard when two armed men confronted them in what appears to have been a robbery.

"No money was taken. No property was taken from him," said Memphis Police Department spokesperson Monique Martin.  "As they were leaving the scene, they fired the shot, striking the victim in the pelvic area one time."

The homeowner, who was inside at the time, came out to find Belue bleeding from the gunshot wound.  Neighbors were shocked by what happened.

"This doesn't happen around here. We might get bicycles stolen if you leave stuff in the front yard, but not violent crimes," neighbor Ellen Morrow said.

Other landscapers who work in the Chickasaw area said that, while they haven't had any problem with robbers, Belue's shooting will make them more cautious.  Colleagues said this shooting is just another example that "crime" can happen anywhere.

Police are looking for two suspects in this case.  The getaway vehicle is either a red 2000 Chevy Impala or Mercury with Tennessee tags AZE-799.  The car may have tinted windows and a pair of fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror.
