Teen shot to death in Horn Lake

Horn Lake police spent Tuesday piecing together the Monday afternoon shooting death of a teenager.

Witnesses said a quiet street in the Greenbriar subdivision of Horn Lake was transformed into a murder scene Monday afternoon.

According to DeSoto County Coroner Jeff Pounders, 16-year-old said James W. Hill died Monday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven.  Hill was shot after an altercation with three people that had escalated from a verbal argument and a fight last week.

Horn Lake Police Captain Shannon Beshears said officers caught one suspect shortly after the shooting, and two others early Tuesday morning.

"We tracked down another individual later that evening in Horn Lake," Beshears said.  Tunica County sheriff's helped Horn Lake officers capture the third suspect, he added.

Neighbor Tanisha Smith said she knew James well, and considered him like a little brother.  She described him as a man who was 'turning his life around' after recently becoming a father.

"He was a regular teenager" she said. "He was real respectful. He was friendly."

Long time resident Jane Cannon, who lived across the street from the victim, set she was saddened by the shooting, but was hopeful for the future.

"We know there's gonna be problems, but we are gonna work together and work with them to try to solve them," she said.

Beshears said Monday's murder was the first in over five years in Horn Lake.
