Memphis man accused of beating girlfriend as children watched

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis man was under arrest Wednesday on charges he beat his girlfriend with a lamp, officials said.

Jerrico Malone was charged with aggravated assault, while his girlfriend remained in critical condition at The MED.

Investigators said three small children witnessed the nearly deadly beating, including one that was in her arms. Malone later fought with officers as he was being arrested.

Court documents obtained by Action News 5 say the victim was inside her Frayser apartment styling her friend's hair when one of the children accused Malone of flirting with her friend.

The woman told police Malone then began beating his girlfriend with a lamp.

Domestic Violence Court Advocate Danielle Paez of the YWCA said children witnessing domestic violence is something that happens far too often.

"Domestic violence there's a cycle," Paez said. "If children are viewing this, children learn by behavior."

According to court records, the victim had not taken out an order of protection against Malone.  It is something Paez said can protect you if the abuser tries to see you, call, or email you.

"Often times it's seen as just a piece of paper, but there are criminal charges that can be brought against someone if they have violated it," Paez said.

Experts say if you are in a situation that may become violent, you should make a safety plan. Keeping your car full of gas, hiding a pair of car keys, and keeping important documents where you can grab them are a few examples of things you can do.

Malone was charged with assault four years ago, but the charge was dropped.

The Memphis Police department said so far this year they have had nearly 1,300 aggravated assault cases - a number that is down slightly from last year.
