It could be the greatest catch ever. The City of Memphis landed the "big one." Bass Pro Shops signed a development agreement to do something useful with The Pyramid which has been doing nothing but gathering dust for the last few years.
Sounds great, so what's the rub? Well, Bass Pro Shops still has plenty of wiggle room to get off the hook with very little of the company's money at risk. The deal requires $30 million in public money to get the project off the ground.
And here's a biggie: many area residents are so suspicious of any development deal by our local governments that they'll never recognize the value of this project even if it does turn out be the greatest catch ever.
To some extent, that suspicion is just the nature of the beast. Citizens will always be skeptical of private enterprise developments that use public money. On the other hand, you can't say our local governments' reputation was not earned.
