MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis woman was killed late Wednesday night when she was struck by a stray bullet.
Investigators said when a fight broke out among several armed individuals late Wednesday in the parking lot of the Hillview Apartments, one of the shots fired went through the window of Mary McKinney's apartment.
McKinney, 56, was struck by the bullet, and died a short time later.
Thursday morning, stuffed animals line the doorstep McKinney's apartment, where she lived for two years.
"She was the sweetest," neighbor Judy Haley said. "She'd help you any time you needed help."
Neighbor Mary Thompson said she heard gunshots outside McKinney's apartment building around 10:30.
"They shot about five minutes and they stopped, and then they started right back up," Thompson said.
A single bullet went through the window of McKinney's apartment, striking her in the head. Moments later, the news began to spread.
"They said she was dead," Thompson said.
Thursday, Memphis homicide detectives were still combing the complex for clues, while wary residents looked on.
"This is really supposed to be a safe place to live, and it doesn't have to be this way," Haley said.
In fact, Haley said, she had supper with her friend two hours before she died. Friends hope police catch McKinney's killer, even though it won't undo her senseless death.
'We can't change what's happened, but we all can pray for things to get better," Haley said.
