DeSoto County Schools director arrested on assault charges

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Mike Smith, Director of Pupil Services at DeSoto County Schools was arrested Wednesday night on charges of domestic violence and assaulting a police officer.

Southaven Police Department spokesperson Mark Little said Smith refused to comply with commands given by police officers called to his house in reference to a disurbance.  Smith allegedly struggled with police, striking an officer in the face with a closed fist.

"He is an exemplary employee," a DeSoto County Schools spokesperson said in a written statement. "He works 12 hours a day, and this behavior is completely out of character."

Smith has been suspended from duty until the district is able to conduct its own investigation.

Police also charged Smith with damaging a Southaven Police squad car.
