Ousted MLGW President Joseph Lee is back on the city payroll. How you feel about this probably has everything to do with how you feel about Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton.
Lee resigned from the MLGW job after admitting that he let a city council member slide on his utility bills. But Mayor Herenton's version of what happened to Lee is that he was simply caught in the crossfire of people who were trying to oust the Mayor himself.
Herenton was easily re-elected last year, but even so, 58% of Memphians voted against him and it seems as if the Mayor relishes doing things that will keep the majority of his constituents perpetually riled up.
If Mayor Herenton really wanted to move the city ahead and help his friend Joseph Lee, he would have simply used his considerable influence to find Lee a job in the private sector.
If Lee is as good an executive as the Mayor claims he is, that should not have been difficult. But there's no satisfaction for Mayor Herenton in that. It's a move that would have antagonized no one.
