MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - "It's terrible for both families," said Alfreda Taylor.
On a quiet cove in Cordova, neighbors like Taylor are trying to figure out why Memphis Police Officer Chancy Jones may have killed his mistress, Phyllis Malone.
"There are better ways to get out of a relationship than going that far," said Taylor. "He should have sought help sooner."
Jones is accused of shooting Malone more than once Tuesday morning as she sat in her car outside a Whitten Road convenience store. He reported to work at the Raines Station precinct hours later. That's where homicide detectives picked him up.
Here is an excerpt from the police affidavit obtained by Action News Five: "Chancy Jones was located and after waiving his Miranda Rights gave a typed written statement admitting to being the person responsible for shooting and killing Phyllis Malone."
"It's a good day in the fact we've apprehended a criminal," said MPD Director Larry Godwin. "But it's always a sad day when you find out it's one of your own."
Friends of Phyllis Malone, who did not want to talk on camera, said she was pregnant at the time of her murder. They said Officer Jones was the father and that Malone was killed after threatening to tell his wife.
"We've got two families that are literally torn apart," said Godwin.
The police department is left reeling from the arrest of a fellow officer.
Up until now, Officer Jones had an exemplary record with MPD. His girlfriend, Phyllis Jones, had a history of domestic issues, but not with Jones. Police believe their affair only lasted a short time.
