Memphis City School Superintendent Kriner Cash probably wasn't expecting a cake walk when he took his new job, and he definitely did not find one when he got here. The budget slashing by the Memphis City Council and declining enrollment figures are just a couple problems that have greeted the superintendent upon his arrival here.
To his credit, Dr. Cash seems to be responding to the adversity confidently and appropriately. His administration quickly made the difficult choices to prepare an annual school budget with fewer resources than the system had before.
What's more, Dr. Cash assured everyone that he would work in the future to make better use of the dollars that are available for public education.
As best I can tell, Dr. Cash and his team made these hard financial decisions in the best interests of the students and without any whining. I'd call that a difficult, but promising start.
