Mother and children injured in tunnel crash

A Memphis mother and her children were hospitalized Sunday afternoon following a car crash in a Midtown railroad tunnel. The car was rear-ended at a stoplight at the corner of Josephine and Southern, near the Liberty Bowl.

Paramedics transported two children, ages 5 and 10, to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in critical condition. The five-year-old was unconscious.

"First baby they put in the ambulance, he looked like he was hurt pretty bad. Real bad head injury," said Devin Brown, who lives nearby.

A 14-year-old boy and the children's mother were taken to The Med in non-critical condition.

A battalion chief said the driver who caused the crash has diabetes and suffered a seizure while driving. She does not recall the accident, and authorities say alcohol was not a factor.

The driver also sideswiped a church bus carrying four adults. They weren't injured.

Several witnesses heard the crash, and neighbors say the tunnel was an accident waiting to happen.

"A lot of accidents happen right here in the tunnel," said Brown.
