MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Police are investigating after a man was found shot to death Monday morning on Stephens Place near South Orleans.
When officers arrived at the scene just before 9:30am, they found a man sitting in the driver's seat of his car, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The car was riddled with bullets, and the man was pronounced dead a short time later.
"Shots were fired apparently while he was sitting in his car," Memphis police spokesperson Monique Martin said. "And the car continued in motion and went up the driveway and wrecked."
Witnesses told police a green vehicle, possibly a Chrysler, was seen leaving the scene of the shooting. Police are still investigating that lead.
Family and friends of the victim, who has not been identified, swarmed Stephens Place as news of the shooting spread.
"I didn't want to believe it until I saw them pull him out and actually put him in that truck," one person said. "And it's true. He's dead."
Inside the house where the car wrecked, police sound a baby - alone, but safe and unharmed. Officials said the baby was never in danger, and it was turned over to an aunt.
Ida B. Wells Academy, located near the scene of the shooting, was put on lock down while police investigated the shooting.
Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
