SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Whether you're coming from the north or the south, DeSoto County leaders hope a new visitors center will be a one stop shop for all of your travel needs.
"This will be that single location where they can stop and find all they need to know," Chuck Robert, Chairman of the DeSoto County Tourism Association, said Thursday.
Business and community leaders gathered at the site of what will be the new center Thursday to talk about what it will bring to the county.
Thursday business and community leaders gathered at what will be the new location for the $650,000 dollar visitors center.
Located on I-55 directly next to the DeSoto Civic Center, the visitors center will be easy to spot from the highway.
"To have the opportunity to build a tourism/visitors center here in the heart of DeSoto County is a happening that has not happened in the history of this town," Roberts said.
As the first visitors center for the county and the northern part of the state, Roberts said, the new center will benefit thousands of annual visitors to the area. One of the biggest draws is the annual baseball world series event at Snowden Grove Park in Southaven, which draws an estimated 15,000 people annually.
"Definitely with the ball teams in town June and July, they spend a tremendous amount of money in our restaurants and in our community," Roberts said.
Tourism officials say that construction on the project should be completed by early spring of 2009.
