Police dog nabs burglar hiding out in Macy's

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A burglar was discovered after he tripped an alarm at the Macy's Department store inside Oak Court Mall early Wednesday morning, officials said.

Investigators said the suspect likely entered the store before it closed overnight, hiding employees left for the day.   When he came out of hiding, he accidentally set off a motion detector, causing an alarm to sound.

Police said the man was dressed completely in black, with a black towel wrapped around his head. The only thing visible to officers were his eyes.

"It's kind of an interesting way to hide yourself," Macy's customer Keelan French said Wednesday. "I'm surprised they didn't think to notice him under a big pile of towels."

When police arrived at the store, an MPD K9 unit entered and sniffed out the suspect, tracking him down.  After he was captured, the man was taken to a local hospital with non-critical injuries.

Once he is released, police said, he will face burglary charges, in addition to a previous probation violation.

A Memphis Police Department spokesperson said the number of burglaries this year in Memphis is about the same as last year at this same time.
