MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The top choirs in Memphis will compete for bragging rights and the chance to be called the 'Best Choir in America' at the annual church choir competition Thursday night at FedExForum.
The event, 'How Sweet The Sound,' will select winning choirs in Memphis and 10 other cities.
At the concert, eight Memphis choirs will sing their hearts out at what event organizers called the event the 'American Idol' of church choir competitions.
The winner of Thursday's competition will receive a $25,000 prize, and will compete in Atlanta next month with other winning choirs for a $50,000 national grand prize.
Last year, Memphis' New Direction Christian Church took home the grand prize. Church members Thursday said they were hoping to make it two in a row.
Verizon Wireless is the official sponsor of the concert. Events leading up to the concert include a choir showcase featuring area youth choirs, gospel karaoke, and a gospel art exhibit.
