Hockey is set to come back to the DeSoto Civic Center as the Central Hockey League Players Union averts a planned Strike...something new for the Minor Leagues...
The only thing the Mississippi RiverKings want to strike are the opposing teams.
Cold steel on ice.
It's back but not by much!
The first day of Riverkings training camp almost didn't happen because of a recently settled player's strike.
AND NOW...it's day one with new head coach Kevin Kaminski.
The Kings made the playoffs each of the last two years but just didn't have the fire power to make it all the way.
Kaminsky aims to change that.
He recently negotiated an affiliation with the Tampa Bay Lightening and its triple A Norfolk.
"I want a team that's gritty and greasy and will fight for every inch of ice."
It's a whole new Riverkings team this year...they have only 3 players returning from last year and they're pretty good...starting with one of the best defensemen in the league, Derek Landmesser.
Forward Louis Dumont says:
"We'll have an exciting up tempo style this year."
The Kings will play a 2 exhibition games with Shreveport this weekend before opening the season Friday, October 17 at home against Wichita.
